Favorite Alphabet Books!

Updated: Aug 4, 2021

We are starting to get into some very early stage alphabet learning over here at our house.

My son is two, so our goals with the alphabet are pretty modest- understand that print carries a message, recognize a few letters, and enjoy the learning process.

To get us started, here are a few of our favorite alphabet books, and if you're interested in doing a letter a week challenge, check out how we did it here:

1. Touch and Feel ABC by Scholastic

It rhymes and there's a tactile component on each page. What more could an early alphabet learner want?!

I'll be honest- I don't understand what is so magical about trucks and construction vehicles, but my son is IN LOVE with this book.

In this alphabet book, each letter matches up with something that can be found on a construction site. Some are things that you've heard of (like "D is for Dump Truck"), and some items are a little out of my depth like, "H is for Horizontal Borer." Luckily, there is a short description of each vehicle that goes along with the picture, so everyone gets to learn together.

3. Hide and Seek ABC by Make Believe Ideas Ltd

This is one of my most favorite of the favorite alphabet books! Each page features lots of different items that start with the featured letter.

You can read the rhyming clues and have your child find the listed items or play your own version of I Spy with your little one. It's definitely a fun book with lots of opportunity for interaction.

4. TouchThinkLearn ABC by Xavier Deneux

Another tactile alphabet book! It's beautiful and clever graphic design. Plus, the letters are raised, so kids can feel and trace the letters with their little fingers.

5. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.

A classic alphabet book that helps familiarize kids with the letters of the alphabet in a creative way.

6. LMNO Peas by Keith Baker

This cute book features peas doing all sorts of different activities that start with each letter of the alphabet. The illustrations are super fun and give the readers a lot to discover on each page. It's another great interactive read.

Two more BONUS BOOKS that look great (based on a recommendation from Everyday Reading) but our family hasn't had the chance to read yet:

Backseat A-B-See by Maria van Lieshout

Creature ABC by Andrew Zuckerman

About Mama Says

I'm Lauren, a wife and mom living in Texas. I love coffee dates, game nights, football season, and bike rides.

I heavily rely on the wisdom and knowledge of other moms. Whether it's a serious topic such as discipline or something more mundane (but just as vital to my sanity) like, "Is there a diaper that my son won't pee through in the middle of the night?!," my community of fellow moms has been vital. The motto for Mama Says is "leaning into everyday mom life," and I hope that the content here helps you in some small way as you work each day loving and raising little humans.

What you can expect from Mama Says- DIYs, recipes, kid product reviews, activity ideas, parenting tips and tricks, and regular life stuff.
